The story begins in 1865 when Prudence Smith, a former servant of Lenox's lifelong friend Lady Jane Grey, is found dead of an apparent suicide at her new place of employment. Lady Jane asks Lenox to investigate, and he quickly determines it was actually murder by a rare and expensive poison called bella indigo (the "beautiful blue"" of the title).

As Lenox delves into the case at the home of George Barnard, Director of the Royal Mint, he must navigate a house full of suspects and a web of loyalties. When a second body is discovered during a fashionable ball, Lenox must untangle the truth before the killer strikes again.
